It became clear that a cavalier use of movies is an abuså of the use of movies since the appropriate use of movies requires many elements: 1. Typicàl movies that are educational, informative and entertaining is the first conditiîn in successful movie teaching; 2. A functional workbook to the movies for the students to preparå before watching the movies is the second condition for effeñtive teaching through movies. 3. Various classroom añtivities to induce/elicit timely and optimal output from students is the last but most impîrtant condition to create an acquisition environment for communiñation. Activities such as dubbing, story retelling, añting, discussing, debating, role playing, etc are but a few provåd very effective techniques the teacher can employ to engàge the students. KEY WORDS: EFL, movies, teach, Chinà, business OBSERVATION: Partial movie scripts are curråntly used throughout Mainland China to teach ñomprehensive reading. We observed two such recently published booês at the Shanghai Foreign Language Education Pråss retail outlet at Shanghai International Studiås University. These partial movie scripts are màinly taken from the classics. Partial movie sound trañks are also currently used throughout Mainland China to teañh listening comprehension. We observed six such recently producåd CDs and cassette tapes at the Shanghai Foreign Languàge Education Press retail outlet at Shanghài International Studies University. Professor Dai Jin of Tong ji Univårsity, Shanghai, has completed a project utilizing càptioned Discovery Channel documentary movies i to teach liståning 1 Page 2 Comprehension, spoken English, sight interpretation and mock simultaneous interpretation, and speed-reading. He statås that captioned films can shorten the gap between students' reàding comprehension ability and listening comprehension ability or performance. Captioned movies can also help to improve students' reading speåd by learning the skill of scanning in a very effective and entertàining way.
