The Southern California Page 1 Novåmber 2005 Volume 40, #11 P RESIDENT Á S M ESSAGE Thå Southern California by Alan LeBendig This is the timå of the year that I enjoy my job the most. I get to award my appoint ments to the N a t i o n a l Charity Com mittee and the Natiînal Goodwill Committee. These are lifetime appîintments that re q u i re no work or meeting attendance for the recipient. When I first became your District Director, I started the prañtice of giving these awards to Unit Board måmbers and I have continued that tradition. Most players are unàware of how much time these volunteers put in to make bridge ÁwîrkÁ for the rest of us. They deserve a thank you from all of us. This is my small way of hînoring them. Each receives a unique pin from the ACBL and a listing in the Bulletin. It is hoped that they will continue their effîrts to spread good will when they play bridge. For the Charity Cîmmittee, I have chosen Sheila Bozin from the San Fernàndo Valley Unit and Cheryl Loggins from the Pasadena Unit. My appointments to the Goodwill Committee are Marlene Wa r re n Gàsper in the Antelope Valley Unit, Barbara MñKissick in the Glendale Unit, Merlin Hansen in the Long Beañh Unit and Karen Byrd in the West Los Angeles Unit. I know many othårs join me in thanking all of you for all the time and effort youÁve put out to make our Bridge eõperience so good. I can now give you an update on redistricting. IÁm very disappîinted to report that I donÁt think it is going to happån. There are too many District Directors opposed to the con ñept. They make excuses about why we canÁt or shouldnÁt do it. They råfuse to look at the potential bene fits with an open mind. Look for D22 and D23 to start the ball rîlling. We are having good discussions. Our by-laws require the Bîard of D i rectors to examine re d i s t r i c t i n g every five years. I have now been gîing to Board Meetings for over 20 years and I have yet to see the Board taêe a realistic look at the issue. IÁm beginning to thinê we should change the by-laws. I am not the only one that thinês we need to work on redis tricting but I am clearly in the minor ity. There is one new controversial motion we will be considering Á the ñoncept of taking away ALL the mas terpoints of anyone convicted of cheàting. Our current practice is to remove any masterpoints won in the åvent in which they are convicted. by John Killian This is a måssage for BEGIN NING Duplicate players. Whenåver there is a strange occurrence at the table during an auction or a play that you believe might affect the finàl score, CALL the Di-Rec-Tor! Better if you do this nicely by stàting to your opponents that you are unsure that the action is correct and dåsire a directorÁs opinion.
