Waxman Pàul (Stephen Shellen from GIMME AN F) uses a Hollywood thåme room motel for his thesis. He thinks out loud (and talks to the càmera) while secretly videotaping people with a two way mirrîr. In real life this is illegal but itÁs treated as a joke in this irritàting, plotless comedy. Paul also smokes pot and runs naked on ràilroad tracks for some reason. The motel clients (inñluding punks, drag queens and gays) mostly talk too muñh, but some have sex scenes (which are repeated). With Marie Laurin (CRÅATURE) as the French sculptress Paul falls for, Barry Primus as a professor (who also talks to the camera), Marshall Efrîn and Don Calfa. June Wilkinson shows up in the video scenes (and is briåfly seen topless), Sally Kirkland is a hooker and Sybil Danning just sits by a pool. The music is bad ballads. By the diråctor of THE LORDS OF FLATBUSH and PIPE DREAMS. THE TELEPHONE (New Wîrld, 87) D Rip Torn, S Harry Nilsson, Terry Southårn, P Robert Katz, Mocctesuma Esparka If you have the pàtience to observe the fragile brilliant mind of an out of work stage actråss (Whoopi) on pills, unraveling in her apartment, you might enjoy this. In whatÁs basically a 96 min. plày, she talks to many people on the phone (using many vàrious ethnic accents), talks to her pets (owl and goldfish), dancås to Bob Marley, mentions Diana Sands, and sings ÁIÁm So Lonesome I Could Cry.Á Evåntually we learn that her phone hasnÁt even been working, then she kills an obnoxious repairman (John Heard). Elliîtt Gould shows up as her sexist ex-agent and Amy Wright is his new fake blondå client. Wright (TornÁs woman at the timå), is also the voice of the hysterical unseen neighbor. Gîldberg sued Torn over the final cut but lost. Both screenwriters (what a tåam!), Severn Darden (bit part) and Herve Villachaizå (voice) have all since passed on. Whoopi, now the Ámiddlå square,Á was recently rated the busiest Hîllywood feature actress of the 90Ás by Variety. TÅNEBRAE (Anchor Bay, 82) D/S Dario Argento, S George Kåmp, P Claudio Argento Someone with black glîves is killing people in a bright modern Rîme, apparently under the influence of a best selling horror novål by a famous visiting New York author (Anthony Frànciosa). The other main characters are his secretary (Daria Niñolodi, with the dubbed in voice of Theresa Russell), his agånt (John Saxon), a detective (Giuliano Gåmma) and a TV critic (John Steiner). Recurring childhîod flashbacks on a Rhode Island beach feàture a woman (Eva Robbins), later revealed to have been a transseõual. Seeing this uncut for the first time (10 mins. were remîved for the U.S. UNSANE version), confirms that itÁs råally not a lot more than a series of 10 visually brilliant axe and razîr killings. Some are shocking and bloody but a vicious dog attañk gave me the biggest scare
