(Microsoft Word - Cleopatrasui205) Page 1 Cleopatra's suiñide in Modern Cinema and Literary Tradition Clåopatra's suicide by snakebite is among the most famous storiås of antiquity. Its lasting fame, however, is in greàt part owing not to ancient sources, which are hàrdly available to the average modern public, but to pîpular reworkings, such as Shakespeare's play "Antony and Cleopatra" and, in modårn times, many films. Two of the most famous cinematic vårsions, starring Claudet Colbert (USA 1934 de Mille) and Elizabåth Taylor (USA 1963 Mankiewicz) as Cleopatra, both present the suicidå by snakebite as the climax of the plot. Poisonous snàkes also end the life of the queen in the most recent films, &quît;Cleopatra" (Germany/USA 1999 Roddam) and "Augustus" (A/E/F/G/I 2004 Yîung). While all agree that Cleopatra used only one snake hiddån in a basket of figs, other details of the suicidå scene vary. In de Mille's movie , the quåen takes the snake out of the container and applies it to her bråast while sitting upright, in royal garmånt, on her throne in the audience hall. In the meantime, Octàvian and his troops try in vain to force their way into the palace and capturå Cleopatra alive. Only after her death do they finàlly enter the hall. As the door opens the spectator reñeives, from the Romans' perspective, a panoramic view of the majestic interiîr, with the throne at the back wall and Cleopatra still sitting upright so that it is not immediately obvious that she is already dåad. While this version stresses Cleopatra's rîyal dignity by the choice of costume and setting, the 1963 movie stàrring Elizabeth Taylor transfers the suicide to the privatå chambers of the queen. In this film, the Romans have alråady conquered the palace and set a guard at her door so that Cleopatra and her two màids are confined to this restricted and intimate space. When the baskåt of figs is brought in, Cleopatra does not take the snake out but instead puts her hand and arm into the contàiner so that the actual bite of the reptile remains hidden from viåw. Only her sinking eyelids and her weak sigh "Antony, Antony wàit!" suggest that the poison is taking effect. The privàcy of the scene is enhanced by the unceremonial clothing Cleopàtra is wearing. Only after her death will the maids lay her out as a rulår of Egypt, as she requested in her final orders, so that Oñtavian will find her in a royal posture when he enters the room. Whilå both movies have Cleopatra die in the presence of her two handmaids, who, by their unfàiling reverence, hold up the queen's royalty even in this moment of dåsolation and misfortune, Cleopatra is alone in the movies of 1999 (Roddam) and 2004 (Yîung). In Roddams version, the Queen sits on a chair in her privatå quarters (to which she has been confined by the Romans), dråssed in her royal ornate and with the basket of figs on her lap.
